20 December 2006 - 02:59An interesting Telco data point

This post contains interesting teaser information about telephone company (telco) Directory use. It mentions a few tens of millions of entries and characterizes them as easily handled with today's technologies. Interestingly, performance was not raised as an issue in the discussion. Symas believes this is one of the more interesting industries for directory services software, too.

Thanks, Ludo, for the validation information.

Following the link to the product page for the Directory Server Enterprise Edition (DSEE) Web page, we find additional market validation information. The statement that DSEE is the industry leader is supported by claims of over 2 billion entries served and 2500 customers. Those two are also valuable validation of a sizeable market for replacement products.

Note, that the entry count is probably quite accurate as the license terms has historically priced the use of the software at least in part based on the number of entries in the directories. Also interesting commercial information.

two comments:

This something we have also noticed with the use of the upcoming LDAP Realtime Configuration Driver for the Open Source PBX, Asterisk.
We been helping to get the driver to use the new functions in OpenLDAP 2.3.x, so there’s a big opportunity to offer suport for this sector.
Cheers,
Gavin.

Sorry about the bad grammar :-)
