20 September 2006 - 03:31A New Directory Server? ... Really? Why!?

The usual RSS feeds turned up this posting with an odd quoted comment. The drift, before you go off to read it is that at least one of the Ubuntu people is thinking about an Active Directory killer.

Didn't we already do that?

I did post a comment. But Novell's NDS and any start-up Directory Server (yet another start from scratch replacement for superior technology) will have to contend with the existing leader: OpenLDAP and Symas's Connexitor™ Directory Services distributions. Nothing is either as fast or as stable. Nothing scales as well. Nothing is as dynamicly configured. It's got a person-decades of development advantage over anyone just specifying a new product. And it's the most standards compliant Directory on the planet.

It's always nice to see enthusiasm. Come join the OpenLDAP project. It'll be a more productive expenditure of energy.
