28 September 07 - 04:05Symas at the CIFS Workshop (Samba Team) at Google

Thanks to Lars Mueller for inviting Howard, Dan Shearer for adding me, and Jeremy Allison (and Google) for hosting the CIFS Workshop. Samba team was well represented and the rest of us all had a blast testing, consulting, and hanging out. The LDAP representation was terrific with folks from Red Hat/Fedora, Novell, Apple and us from OpenLDAP (Symas). Samba team made it clear they are heavily committed to LDAP going forward and that made for a very happy event. (more)

25 September 07 - 15:38Reflections on LDAPCon 2007

Well, having recovered from my jet lag (just in time for another trip) I had some time to muse on how the conference went. Personally I had a great time catching up with old friends and colleagues and meeting new folks as well. If you've seen some of the photos Ludovic and others took, you might get the idea that we had too good a time... (http://www.guug.de/veranstaltungen/ldapcon2007/further_readings.html) But somewhere amidst the continuous flow of Kölsch beer we actually had some serious discussions too. (more)

17 September 07 - 10:03Gee, that'd be nice to have...

A query came up on the Fedora Directory Users mailing list about dynamic groups. Since dynamic groups have come up again recently in the IETF LDAP Extensions mailing list, I chimed in with some tips, also pointing out that OpenLDAP was already engaged in this work. The fellow making the query then came back and said essentially "gee, I see this other cool overlay in OpenLDAP, it'd be nice to have that in FDS too." Yes, wouldn't it. But what's the point of trying to make FDS more like OpenLDAP, when you could just be running OpenLDAP? (more)

02 September 07 - 01:16GPL-jacking BSD licensed code: Oh, the Irony

Via this SlashDot article, we get to this Kernel Trap posting which talks about a sad state of affairs. People GPL-jacking code originally put out under a BSD-style license.

It is like putting an armed chauffeur into the driver's seat of your car who is going to guarantee that you never speed or change lanes without signallng. (more)

26 09 07 02:29Replacing NIS on Mac OS X

This is a nice blog entry reminding us how nice it is to replace NIS with LDAP ... and it didn't hurt that they used OpenLDAP but didn't mention Symas.
